Collecting Household Hazardous Waste Monday through Friday

Manatee County’s Lena Road Landfill is accepting Household Hazards Waste Monday through Friday from 8am – 5pm and every 3rd Saturday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., from residents only. Customers will be required to unload items from their vehicles with direction from staff on where to place items. For more information please call (941) 792-8811.

Please note that while unwanted gasoline in approved containers can be brought to the Landfill during the week, the containers cannot be returned on weekdays.  Containers can only be returned after disposal at the HHW Collection held the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Manatee County offers free HHW and E-Scrap collections for Manatee County residents only. HHW Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and every 3rd Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. E-scrap can be dropped off for free at the Lena Road Landfill Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Common products found in your home that are labeled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive or explosive are common household hazardous waste (HHW). You can tell if a product is hazardous if words such as POISON, DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION appear on the label. The most common products include:

  • Aerosols (non empty) • Gasoline
  • Antifreeze • Herbicide
  • Automotive Batteries • Weed Killer
  • Cleaning Compounds  • Insecticides
  • Diesel Fuel • Motor Oil
  • Fertilizers • Paint, Stain and Varnish
  • Fluorescent Bulbs  • Propane Tanks
  • Fungicides • Rechargeable Batteries

How do I dispose of my HHW?

Hazardous waste can only be disposed of on sites approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 

Manatee County has established a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program:

  • Manatee County’s Lena Road Landfill is accepting Household Hazards Waste Monday through Friday from 8am – 5pm and every 3rd Saturday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., from residents only. 

  • Unwanted gasoline in approved containers can be brought to the Landfill during the week, however containers cannot be returned to you on weekdays.  Containers can only be returned after disposal at the HHW Collection held the 3rd Saturday of every month. 

  • For the safety of our customers and staff, the handling of items has changed.  Customers will be required to unload items from their vehicles with direction from staff on where to place items. Social distancing of 6 feet will be practiced by both staff and customers. E-Scrap

The term "E-Scrap" is applied to consumer electronic equipment that is no longer wanted. Many components in electronics equipment contain hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. While in use, these hazardous materials do not present a problem, but if discarded improperly pose an environmental threat.

Three Ways to Dispose of E-Scrap

  1. Residents may bring their E-Scrap to the Landfill every Monday - Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This service is free but you must go over the scales to declare your E-Scrap.
  2. Free E-Scrap and Household Hazardous Waste collections are held the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Landfill. Also watch for mobile collection dates.
  3. E-scrap may also be collected at the curb after calling (941) 792-8811 to make special arrangements. There is a fee involved with this service or you may use your one free annual pick-up.

How to Safely Transport HHW

  • Transport items in the trunk or rear of your vehicle in sturdy boxes or containers that can be thrown away. Boxes may be lined with kitty litter or an open garbage bag, this will ensure that your items don’t leak into your vehicle.
  • Don’t mix products.
  • Keep products in original containers.
  • Label products not in original containers.
  • Secure products so they won’t leak!
  • Store products away from the passenger compartment of your vehicle.
  • Don’t store products in the trunk of your car before bringing them to the collection.

Battery Recycling

Alkaline batteries (regular use batteries) that contain no mercury do not pose a threat to the environment and may be thrown away as garbage.

All other batteries such as rechargeable, lead-acid, lithium and Ni-cad batteries are considered household hazardous waste and can be brought to the Lena Road Landfill Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and the 3rd Saturday of the month from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Rechargeable Batteries are fire hazards:
Lithium ion and Nicad batteries do not belong in your trash or recycle cart. They can cause fires if damaged. 

Bio-Hazardous Material

Bio-hazardous materials are sharps, and absorbent items (gauze, cotton, bandages, etc.) that are saturated with blood or other regulated body fluids considered to be biomedical waste and managed in accordance with state rules found in Chapter 64E-16, Florida Administrative Code.

  • Sharps are defined as items having the potential to puncture or lacerate, such as syringes with attached needles and disposable lancets.
  • The Health Department is the only site that offers a Sharps Collection Program in Manatee County.
  • You may obtain an approved Sharp container at the Manatee County Health Department located at 410 6th Ave. East in Bradenton.
  • This program is open to the public and free of charge.

DO NOT place in the recycle cart, give to anyone else, flush down the toilet, or put in the trash.

Medicine Disposal

Project Drug Drop: Citizen Medication Disposal Program

The Sheriff’s Office will accept unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medication for proper disposal. Syringes and liquids are not accepted.

Citizens may take non-liquid medications (pills only and inhalers) to the following locations:

  • 600 301 Blvd. W., #202, Bradenton. 24/7 hours/days
  • 407 57th Ave. E., Bradenton. Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • 616 67th ST. Circle E., Bradenton, Monday - Friday , 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If you can't turn in medication, don't flush it!

  • Keep in the original container. This will help identify the contents if they are accidentally ingested.
  • Mark out your name and prescription number for safety.
  • For pills: add some water or soda to start dissolving them.
  • For liquids: add something inedible like cat litter or dirt.
  • Close the lid and secure with duct tape or packing tape.
  • Place bottle(s) inside a non-see through container (such as a plastic laundry bottle), tape the container closed and place in the trash.

DO NOT place medication in the recycle bin, give it to someone else, flush it down the toilet, or put it in the trash without disguising the drugs, as human or animal scavengers may find and misuse them.
