MANATEE COUNTY, FL (February 5, 2025) – The Manatee Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has approved new enforcement hours of School Zone Speed Cameras throughout the county.
The vote was unanimous to move forward with reducing the enforcement hours from the duration of the school day to only during active times of student arrival and departure from school.
Under the new protocol, the modified enforcement times will start within 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after the start of a regularly scheduled school session and 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after the end of a regularly scheduled school session. The change took effect Wednesday, February 5.
The BOCC previously approved the program in February 2024, and it was launched in August of the same year.
The move came after the Florida Legislature passed Florida House Bill 657 in April 2023, which authorized counties to enforce speed limits in school zones using speed detection systems. Drivers traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted school zone speed limit during designated hours receive a $100 ticket in the mail.
