Development completed before the 1980s typically did not have adequate wetland protection or address stormwater concerns. Today, these protections come in the form of wet ponds and occasionally grassed areas. You might wonder why the newer developments have stormwater ponds with control structures . . .

What can you do to help protect the wetlands in your neighborhood?

• Educate yourself on where these areas are in your neighborhood
• Help keep the buffers clear of debris
• Do not spray fertilizers or pesticides in the wetlands or wetland buffers
• Keep pets on leashes near the buffers to avoid disturbing the wildlife
• Report any illegal dumping, pollution or construction near wetland buffers
